I have decided to read the Bible from beginning to finish. Yes, it will take a very long time and I know some parts of the Bible are boring, but I feel like its something I need to do. There is something to learn from every part of the Bible.

Today I began to read Genesis and realized how little I know about the beginning of the Bible. I know all the stories but I never really looked at the text...

Something that caught my attention was the fact that God put the tree that gives knowledge, when he didn't want Adam to eat from it.

"You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day." Genesis 2:16-17

This seems so strange because He put the tree there when it wasn't supposed to be touched. Why put temptation right in front of Adam? If the tree had never been created, wouldn't the world today still be as perfect as Eden was?

God put this tree there because we as humans were given something not even the angels were given: the ability to make choices. God is a loving God and never forces anything upon us; He gives us a choice. If God forced Adam to not eat from the tree, then that means Adam would obey God from his fear of him, not because of his reverence or respect for God.

People often complain that God doesn't exist because if He really did exist, pain and suffering would not exist in this world. If God existed, why was there such thing as sin? It is because humans were given the gift/curse of making choices. God created us to be able to make the choice of either living for Him or living for ourselves. Satan takes advantage of our ability to make choices and whispers in our ear to make the wrong choice, just as the snake did to Eve.

God puts that tree in my life as well, because if I choose not to eat from it, it means that much more. If there was nothing but perfection in my life then obeying him would be too easy and meaningless. It is when I obey him even in the midst of being tempted that I am truly doing God's will.
